Deborah Willis

Deborah Willis is both a photographer and a scholar who is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking research on the portrayal of African Americans in photography. She has received MacArthur Foundation and Guggenheim Fellow honors as well as the 2014 NAACP Image Award for her book (with Barbara Krauthamer) Envisioning Emancipation. She is professor and chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University/Tisch School of the Arts. Her lecture is entitled “Critical Narratives in Visualizing the Black Body from 1850 to Now.”
