Please, join the UK Appalachian Center and the African American and Africana Studies Program in welcoming beloved author Crystal Wilkinson to Campus for a talk on Tuesday, April 5th. Ms. Wilkinson is the current Writer in Residence at Berea College and will present in the UKAA Auditorium in the W. T. Young Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Her talk is titled Black Women and Mental Health in Appalachia. She will also read from her latest  novel, The Birds of Opulence and hold a discussion with audience members. This event is free, and all UK Students, Faculty, and Staff are most welcome to attend! UK Students, Staff, and Faculty are welcome to join the UK Appalachian Center for a trip to tour the Benham Coal Museum in Benham, KY on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  The group will meet at the UK Appalachian Center (624 Maxwelton Court) to leave by bus at 8 a.m. and return to Lexington by about 8 p.m.  This tour is an opportunity to learn about the history of coal mining in eastern, KY through exhibits on company towns, viewing a mine portal, and hearing from scholars including Dr. Bill Turner on life in Benham and Lynch, KY throughout time.  This is a free event, and we will accommodate as many as we can!  Please RSVP by email to erin.norton@uky.edu to reserve a space on the bus by Thursday, April 16, 2015. The UK Appalachian Center is proud to welcome Crystal Wilkinson for a mini-residency that will include an Appalachian Forum entitled: Birds of Opulence: Black Women, Madness, and Resilience in Appalachia.  This event is free, open to the public, and will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the UK Law School's Auditorium (please, enter through the Memorial Hall side entrance of the building).  Ms. Wilkinson will give a public reading and hold a discussion with attendees.  There is a public reception at the UK Appalachian Center, 624 Maxwelton Court from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. before the reading and discussion.

Young Library.  This year's keynote speaker is Lisa Conley, Ph.D. Her research interests focus on foodways, environmental sustainability, and local food politics in motivating the self-provisioning practices of people in rural and urban Kentucky.  Please, find more information about registration or proposal submition here: https://appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu/annual-research-symposium.  The deadline to submit abstracts is February 15, 2015.  Registration for presenters and non-presenters is free.  Undergraduate and Graduate students are welcome to register.
